The Schelde Estuary pilot study area covers the tidally influenced part of the River Schelde (or Scheldt). The river flows from France through Belgium (Zeeschelde) until it reaches the Westerschelde in the Netherlands. The overall purpose of the pilot study was to develop and test FLOODsite methodologies and tools on the Schelde Estuary.
The international Scheldt River basin district (ISRBD) consists of the Scheldt, Somme, Authie, Canche basins (including the Slack, Wimereux and Liane rivers), the Aa, IJzer and Bruges Polder basins, along with the corresponding coastal waters. The ‘river basin district’ has been defined in article 2 of the European Water Framework Directive, and constitutes the main unit for river basin management as meant by this Directive.
