From International Rivers : Update: In a huge success for civil society groups in Burma, China and internationally, the Burmese government on September 30, 2011, decided to suspend the Myitsone Dam until 2015
China Power Investment plans to build a second Three Gorges Project for China – this time in Burma. The Myitsone mega-dam project on the headwaters of the Irrawaddy River will export 90% of its electricity to China.
The Myitsone project is part of a seven-dam cascade that represents a USD$20 billion investment by China. However, there are serious doubts about the quality and independence of the Environmental Impact Assessment for this mega-dam project, as well as concerns regarding the resettlement process and the role of the project in exacerbating the long-standing conflict between the ethnic Kachin people and the military government.
