Chesapeake Bay is a Ramsar site.

Wetlands provide critical habitat for many Chesapeake Bay species. A variety of living resources depend on different types of wetlands for shelter and food. In the Bay area, there are bottomland hardwood swamps, fresh marshes, salt marshes, and beds of submerged aquatic vegetation.
