In the middle of Western Australia, in the south-western pocket of Birriliburu Indigenous Protected Area (IPA), is Katjarra. It’s a vast landscape – ranging from hard red sand to crystal white salt lakes – and forms one part of the 6.6 million hectare IPA.
This area is of significant cultural and ecological value, and by merging traditional knowledge with science, the Birriliburu partnership is getting Martu people back on country to manage their land – focusing on fire management, threatened species and feral animal monitoring, and bush tucker knowledge.
