Wetland restoration on the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain

The Volga-Akhtuba floodplain (VAF) national park is an area containing internationally important Ramsar wetlands. However, because of successive human activities, the hydrological regime of the area has been greatly diminished. Development of agriculture and increasing regulation of water flows upstream of the floodplain have greatly impacted on the natural dynamics of the system. Gradually, over time, the wetland environment has become degraded.
