Do not push the river, it flows by itself

"Because we have the UAV we can access areas really quickly and the height we can fly at, you don't have to get very close to the river because you can fly it 500 metres away from you where you can get the images," explained Neil Entwistle from the university's School of Environment and Life Sciences....

One of the lessons to come out of the floods is that defences alone can't protect all our communities from such extreme events. So how can we do more to reduce the risks in the future? A growing part of the answer could be environmental projects, designed to slow key rivers and reduce the intensity of water flows at peak times. Tim Backshall has been looking at some of the ideas.
