Along with eight other river basins in Asia, South America and Africa, the Limpopo river basin has been identified as a Benchmark Basin for the CPWF. The Benchmark Basins provide a geographical focus and the river basin is where the water problems and issues converge, especially in the developing world and this is where the CPWF will carry out its research.

“When the Water Ends,” a 16-minute video produced by Yale Environment 360 in collaboration with MediaStorm, tells the story of this conflict and of the increasingly dire drought conditions facing parts of East Africa. To report this video, Evan Abramson, a 32-year-old photographer and videographer, spent two months in the region early this year, living among the herding communities.

Zambezi River Basin Initiative (ZRBI)

The project focuses on building communities capacities and resilience to cope with the challenges related to flooding and general poverty in the Districts along the Zambezi River. This projects looks at capacity building for the local Red Cross Branches to facilitate their work and support to communities. Consequently communities are also supported in a variety of activities to improve livelihoods in the sectors of Water supply and sanitation, Health and Agriculture.

Bangladesh and India have some of the most intricate and complex river systems in the world. The Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna, the three major rivers, along with their tributaries drain an area of about 1.75 million km2 and directly impact the lives of 620 million people.
