Neva - a symbol of St. Petersburg and the only source of drinking water for millions of people in the city and some settlements of the Leningrad region. Unlike most megacities, Petersburg has practically no alternative sources of water supply, in addition to the Neva. But Neva is not only used for the abstraction of water. The majestic River directly discharged wastewater of industrial enterprises and public utilities.

HELCOM (Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission - Helsinki Commission) is the governing body of the Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area, known as the Helsinki Convention. The Contracting Parties are Denmark, Estonia, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden.
