The Athabasca River flows unimpeded across Alberta from the Columbia Icefields in the Rocky Mountains to Lake Athabasca, providing habitat for more than 30 species of fish. The river supplies the largest direct inflow of water to the Peace-Athabasca Delta – one of the world’s largest freshwater deltas, a wetland of international significance, and among the most important waterfowl nesting and staging areas in North America.
